The Dogs First Time at the Beach

The local news stations had special presentation documentaries about Hurricane Ike at the beginning of hurricane season (BTW - Denise, I sure hope you are still willing to be our evacuation station because we NEVER want to hunker down again!) and Gina said she hadn't been to Galveston since Ike and wanted to see it. So, on a whim, after I returned from playing games with Mom yesterday I said "Let's go! And let's take the dogs!" and off we went!

Unfortunately we forgot how to go down 288 to Hiway 6 and over to I-45 so we wound up in Freeport. Then, there was a bad wreck which blocked us from continuing, and we had trouble following the map so we got a little lost around the Dow Chemical plant and made a bunch of circles. I finally asked a local how to get to Galveston and he said "Go back to the Bucees, turn right and go straight. You'll hit the beach." So we did. And for the first time I saw Surfside Beach. But Gina wanted to see Galveston. Not Surfside. So we followed the signs to Galveston, took a $2 toll bridge over the Gulf and arrived on the extreme west beach of Galveston. I'd never come out this far. I think that where we crossed might be the San Luis Pass - but I'm not sure....

Anywho, we finally got to a place where we could access the beach and the dogs, especially Tater, were ECSTATIC! Immediately the sniffing out the surroundings began and the post-ride pooping. Behind Gina is a large dune which looked like it would be easy to walk over. But it was a bit of a challenge! Nonetheless, we finally got to the ocean.

We had Porch Boy and Tater on flexi-leashes so that they could run more freely, but I kept Trip on a 6' one since he's still so aggressive around strangers. As you'll see in this video he got frustrated when he couldn't keep up with the pack.

Gina also had a few challenging moments with the flexi-leashes...

Tater really did love running into the waves and had the flexi-leash allowed, she would have been about half-way to Hawaii!

We were so late by the time we finally got to the beach we only got to stay a little while before the sun went down, but it was fun.

Looks like Tater's a beach bum by nature! Caylie's second home is the beach. She loves to collect the shells.

Looks like it was fun!

I can't believe you've never been to Surfside before!
